Licensing

A licence key proves what you've licensed. It's checked on the device, so it never calls home and can't take your product down.

Your licence key

You'll find it in your account. Pass it to createEngine:

JavaScript
const engine = await createEngine({ licenseKey: "TM1..." });

engine.license;
// { valid: true, licensee: "Acme AG", plan: "standard", domains: [], expires: "2027-11-18" }

The key isn't a secret: it ends up in your front-end code, and it only works for what it says. It's signed, so it can't be edited.

What it checks

CheckMeaning
SignatureIt was issued by Typomat, and hasn't been changed.
ExpiryIt's within its date, which runs 14 days past your paid period, so a late renewal doesn't leave you unlicensed.
DomainOn a domain-limited licence, the page is on that domain or one of its subdomains. localhost is always fine.

If a check fails, the SDK writes a warning to the console, and engine.license.reason says why. The engine keeps working. A lapsed key should never break your product for your users, so it's your job to keep it current: the licence is a contract, not a lock.

Renewal

A yearly licence renews by itself, and your account then has a new key with the new date. Replace the key when you next ship.

What your users can do

Fonts made with the engine in your product are your users' to use, commercially and for good, with no royalties to anyone: in their designs, their products and their brands. Those fonts stay licensed even after your own licence ends. A generated font isn't exclusive, since anyone could reach the same numbers.

What a licence doesn't cover

  • Passing on the engine itself, or the package, other than inside your product.
  • Offering the engine as a font-generation service or API of your own.
  • Using it to mass-produce a font catalogue for sale.

The Engine License has the full terms. If your case sits close to a line, ask Marco.

The app is a separate thing

Fonts from the Typomat app, and its Figma plugin, come under the Font License. That covers using the fonts you make yourself. It doesn't let you put the engine in a product.
